Together, Ruffin Stewart (1812/1813-1860) and his wife, Mary Jane Evans (1824-1855/1860), gave birth to at least ten children. Ruffin was a free Black man who purchased his own freedom, owned his own land, and made his living as a farmer. After the couple’s deaths in 1855, their children were sent to live with and work for various white families across Macon County, North Carolina.
